Fatal hit-and-run crash victim identified

Fatal crash closes portion of I-680 in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) –  A woman was killed in an accident on Interstate 680 in Youngstown Monday morning, and police are looking for the car that they believe fatally struck her.

The crash happened about 5:45 a.m. Monday on I-680 southbound, near the Shirley Road exit.

According to police, Nicole Baird, 20, of Youngstown, stopped her car in the far left hand lane while traveling northbound and exited her vehicle after she hit something, which turned out to be a bag of leaves. After exiting the vehicle, she was struck by a sedan that had pulled onto the left shoulder. The impact sent the woman flying onto the southbound side of the interstate.

The person who originally hit Baird called authorities and said he was talking to the woman when a second car hit and killed her. A family member said she was pregnant, so the crash actually took two lives.

Police have ruled the crash a hit-and-run and are looking for the second car, as well as anyone who witnessed the incident. There were no traffic cameras in the area, which police said may have helped in this case.

It remains unclear why Baird chose that spot to stop her car instead of pulling off the roadway where it would have been safer.

“If it is mobile, get over to the curb side of the lane, over the white line, stop and then exit your vehicle. That is what that section of the roadway is made for,” said Youngstown Police Lt. Bill Ross.

The southbound lanes of I-680 were shut down and the northbound lanes were restricted for several hours as crews cleared the scene. All lanes opened up on the highway around 9 a.m.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has any information is asked to call Youngstown Police Lt. Bill Ross at 330-742-8946.
