Happy Trails rebuilds after fire, safety improvements added

RAVENNA, Ohio (WYTV) – An animal sanctuary hit with a devastating fire earlier this year is rebuilding.

Four animals died in the February 14 barn fire at Happy Trails in Ravenna. The barn was also a complete loss.

Fire investigators say a heat lamp or bulb started the fire that killed two goats, a rooster and a pot-bellied pig.

A new barn is up now and Ashley Ehmann, animal care coordinator, said the new building includes safety improvements.

“We are finding new ways to heat the barns. We are trying to better insulate them when they go up so we don’t have to use lamps,” Ehmann said. “We are trying to make it safer.”

Fire extinguishers are now on the outside of all the barns and buildings for easy access.

With the fire several months behind them, there is still a sense of sadness at Happy Trails. The animals lost were loved and missed. But there is still a lot to look forward to. A multi purpose barn is up, and the new indoor riding arena is complete.

“The more changes, the more animals we rescue. We have helped so many animals since the fire. That is what keeps you going and keeps you moving forward,” Ehmann said.

Work has also started on a new pig shelter.

To help offset operating costs, Happy Trails is holding fundraiser Nov. 8. A Compassionate Thanksgiving will be held at Todaro’s Party Center, 1820 Akron Peninsula Rd., Akron, OH. The event will feature a “shopping spree” and a vegan dinner buffet. Tickets for the event are $55 per person. For more information, click here.
