SWANTON, Ohio (WYTV) – A semi-truck caused a chain-reaction crash late Sunday night on the Ohio Turnpike near Toledo, which injured five people and killed a man from Salem, according to a release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The trailer failed to yield for the slow-moving traffic, according to the release, and struck a mid-size passenger car that Robert Melnick, 58, of Salem, was driving.
Two other individuals were taken from the scene to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Three people sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash closed the eastbound lanes of the Ohio Turnpike for about five hours.
Melnick was wearing a seat belt, police said, and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
