Vote to be held on legality of Columbiana geese-feeding

COLUMBIANA, Ohio (WYTV) – Going to the park to feed the birds might be a thing of the past for Columbiana County residents.

Tuesday night, a council meeting will be held to vote on making it illegal to feed geese in Firestone Park.

Park Officials call the Geese a health risk to citizens, as their droppings can be found in areas where children play.

“No feeding” signs have already been posted around the pond and walking trails in anticipation of the vote. At the last council meeting, the park board requested to create an ordinance banning the feeding of geese.

That ordinance would allow the city to enforce a fine to anyone who is caught feeding the geese.

Feeding the geese encourages them to stay, according to park and county officials, which is what they do not want.

Non-lethal tactics, such as bird bangers and screamers are already in use to try and scare some of the geese out of the park.

These noise tactics are not expected to cause neighboring residents any problems.
