Caller entices grandpa to send $4,000

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – A grandfather in Austintown was bilked out of thousands of dollars in what he thought was an effort to help his granddaughter.

According to Austintown police, a township man received a call Monday at 10 a.m. from a person who said they were with the police department in Tucson, Arizona.

The caller said the man’s daughter was in jail and that to post bond he needed to purchase $4,000 in Green Dot MoneyPak cards and call him back with the numbers from the back of the cards.

The township man believed the caller because his granddaughter attends school in the Tucson area. He purchased the cards, called the man back and gave him the numbers.

The man later talked with family members and realized the call was fraudulent.

Austintown police continue to investigate.
