COLUMBIANA, Ohio (WYTV) – This was the year the Crestview football team was supposed to struggle… And the Rebels did early on, losing 2 of their first 3 games. As Ryan Allison tells us, they’re now one win away from their 7th consecutive playoff appearance, thanks in part to our Student Athlete of the Week.
Nathan Stelts is not your typical offensive lineman
“I just like to get up, and make people laugh, haha,” admitted Stelts.
Stelts is a performer, a 4 year member of the schools one act play competition team, and a lead in their Spring musicals. On the football team, he’s made 23 starts, and is the Rebels most experienced lineman.
“I think I’m about 50 pounds lighter than the next heaviest guy on our line. It’s tough. You gotta get that mentality that I’m not going to get driven off the ball because you want to prove you can do it and you can hang with these guys even though you might not be as big,” he said.
Steltz will graduate with eleven varsity letters in football, wrestling, and band. He plays three instruments and is a member of both the marching and concert band. Mental toughness, he says, is the key to success in all of those.
“It’s hard to be a lousy wrestler. So you’ve just got to get it, it’s a lot like playing on the line to get that mentality, that I’m going to work hard so that I don’t lose, so that I can hang with these guys.”
Stelts is also a 4.0 student, and in line to be class valedictorian.
“It’s always the number one priority for me. It’s like in college, all the extracurricular stuff is wonderful, but you’re there to get an education first and foremost,” he added.
