Vigil held in memory of suicide victims

Suicides victims vigil in Warren, Ohio

WARREN, Ohio (WYTV) – The 16th Annual Candlelight Vigil for Suicide Victims was held in Warren Saturday.

Dozens of people who have lost loved ones to suicide gathered at Victory Christian Center, 4257 Tod Ave. N.W., with signs and photos to honor their victims.

The event was started about 15 years ago by Mary Kopiak when she found out that National Suicide Survivors Awareness Day fell on the same day her daughter Valerie took her life.

“I think these people are as important as anybody else,” Kopiak said. “There are candlelight vigils for all kinds of victims for everything else, so we had it for our loved one.”

Both the vigil and the national awareness day are held the third Saturday in November.

The event was coordinated by LOSS and SOS suicide survivors groups.
