, Ohio (WYTV) — Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course in Austintwon said they’re expecting a big crowd for the inaugural thoroughbred horse race on Monday.
With less than 24 hours away, crews are putting those final touches on the race course. The one-mile track is ready go, and the horses have been practicing before their big debut. There are 700 horses on property right now.
“Tomorrow we have approximately 80 hours racing over the course of eight races so that’s a great turnout for opening day, we’re very excited that the horsemen have supported the racing and it’s going to be fun,” said Mark Loewe, Penn National’s Vice President of Ohio Racing Operations.
There are races scheduled through Dec. 30. They’ll then take a short break befor resuming on Jan. 5.
“We’ll go to April 25, so we’re basically going to go almost six straight months,” said Dean Traficant of New Middletown.
Traficant said he’s excited about that. He’s bets on simulcast races, but is ready for live ones.
“It’s going to be a blast, I can’t wait,” said Traficant.
Loewe said live racing will take place throughout the week.
“Live racing on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 12:45,” said Loewe.
All are welcome, as spectators and gamblers can watch the races outside or from one of the 1,000 indoor seats.
“If you’re under the age of 18 you have to be accompanied by an adult,” said Loewe.
Traficant said he plans on watching a lot of races and winning.
“It’s just exciting. It’s a lot of fun, then you get all your friends with you and get crazy,” said Traficant.
The first race is scheduled for Monday at 12:45 p.m.
