Onto the Final 4 for Sharpsville

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pennsylvania (WYTV) – The Blue Devils advanced to the Class A Final Four next week by putting forth a dominating performance tonight in their 50-14 victory over Kane.

Sharpsville opened the contest with an 8-play, 40-yard drive capped by Greg Popatak’s 2-yard touchdown run on the Blue Devils’ first possession of the game which followed up a three-and-out by Kane. In the first quarter, the Wolves’ had 14 plays from scrimmage and only gained more than two yards on just three plays.

After only one score in the opening frame, there were six touchdowns in the second quarter as the Blue Devils jumped out to a 37-6 lead at intermission. Khaliq Ragster scored on a pair of short runs for six-points late in the half. Tyrin Peavy picked off a Jack Kocjancic offering and returned the interception 83-yards to end the half up 31-points. Sharpsville gained 197 yards of offense (109 rushing, 88 passing) in the first half. Sharpsville’s defense held the Wolves to just a single yard on the ground in the first twenty-four minutes of action.

For the game, Sharpsville scored five touchdowns on the ground (2 by Ragster, 1 by Popatak, 1 by Peavy, 1 by George Keck) en route to a 193 yard effort. Luke Henwood (5 for 11 for 126 yards) and Greg Popatak (1 for 1 for 7 yards) threw for 133 yards and completed 50% of their tosses. On defense, the Devils had 3 quarterback sacks, a blocked punt, and 2 interceptions. The Wolves’ found it difficult to move the ball by running the football. Kane ran 29 rushing plays for 20 yards. Kocjancic threw the ball 40 times for 187 yards.

The Blue Devils (11-3) have now won each of their past three post-season games at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium in Slippery Rock by a combined total of 106-28.

Sharpsville will now play the WPIAL powerhouse Clairton (14-0) in the PIAA Class A Western Final which the winner will advance to Hershey to play for the state title. The matchup will be a rematch between the two schools from the 2011 Western Final where Clairton went onto win 30-8 before knocking off Southern Columbia (35-19) the following week in the state championship. Tonight, the Bears broke Jeannette’s (2007) state record for most points scored within a single season of 860. Clairton has now scored 886 through 14 games after their 52-24 win over Berlin Brothersvalley tonight.
