Death sentence thrown out for Yo. man

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – A Youngstown man on death row will get a new sentence hearing after the Ohio Supreme Court decided to throw out his death sentence.

Willie Herring was convicted in the 1996 murders of three people and attempted murders of two others, during a robbery at the Newport Inn bar.

The court’s justices decided 4 to 3 that Herring’s lawyers did not present adequate information about their client’s background to the jury during the penalty phase of his trial.

The case now returns to the Mahoning County Court of Common Pleas for a new sentencing hearing with a new jury. which will decide whether to impose the death penalty or a life sentence.

“We are going to review our options, and see where we can go in light of the supreme court decision,” said Mahoning County Prosecutor Paul Gains.
