Cause determined in Buchanan Manor fire

Buchanan Manor fire

WHEATLAND, Pa. (AP) – A fire chief says a tenant smoking in bed caused a fire at a western Pennsylvania senior citizens’ high-rise where residents were just scheduled to return on Monday.

Nobody was hurt in the fire at Buchanan Manor in Wheatland just before midnight last Wednesday.

The fire was confined to one apartment in the 40-unit building, but Wheatland fire Chief Bob Taylor says smoke and water damage in the other units required them to be cleaned over the weekend. Taylor says residents were to begin returning Monday.

A spokeswoman for National Church Residences, which owns the facility, said last week that tenants were being housed in a hotel until they could return. The spokeswoman, Karen Twinem, could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.
