WARREN, Ohio (WYTV) – A man accused of beating his 4-year-old daughter is now in custody, according to Trumbull County Jail records.

Tedy Mendez, 24, was booked into the jail about 6:25 p.m. Monday on a felonious assault charge. He was arrested in Austintown by the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force.

An all-points bulletin was issued Monday morning that included pictures of the girl’s bruises and a description of Mendez. Police said he beat his daughter and then tried to cover up the crime.

The child was treated at the main campus of Akron Children’s Hospital Sunday where it was discovered that she had been beaten. She has spent the last month visiting her farther in Warren.

“Thank God they got her out of there when they did. If she had been there another week or two who knows,” said Warren Police Capt. Robert Massucci. “Based on some of the bruises I saw, somewhere along the line she could have been hurt seriously.”

The girl’s mother lives in Youngstown and saw a photo of her daughter posted on Facebook. The image showed the girl with Santa Claus and she had dark bruises on her face. Her mother immediately got her daughter and took her to the hospital.

Mendez and his girlfriend said the girl had hurt herself.

“There is no way. I don’t know anybody who could reach down their back and create a punch,” said Massucci. “The area the bruises are in there is no way she could have done it herself.”

The girl was taken to the emergency room at a Warren hospital and then was transported to Akron where it was determined she suffered a broken elbow, a skull fracture and has bleeding on her brain.

“You look at the pictures and she looks so happy. All the trauma she has been through and she has a smile on her face,” Massucci said.
