Youngstown parish celebrates Basilica status

Basilica dedication

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Parishioners of a north side Youngstown church celebrated a very special honor on Monday.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel is now known as a “Minor Basilica.” It joins St. John the Baptist in Canton as the only other Basilica church in the Youngstown Diocese.

Youngstown Bishop George Murry, along with other clergy from the diocese, were on hand to celebrate the event. The title is a rare honor handed out by the Vatican.

“Throughout the world, the Holy Father designates certain churches that are very beautiful and dignified and also has a certain history as well as being a church or community that is very much alive in the Catholic faith,” pastor Msgr. Michael Cariglio said.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel was given the Basilica title in May. The parish decided to mark the event Monday, which was the feast of the Immaculate Conception.

The church, located near downtown Youngstown, was placed on the National Registry of Historic Buildings in 1979.
