Youngstown’s Gallagher Building gets state tax credit

Gallagher Building in downtown Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – There soon will be more places to live and play in downtown Youngstown.

The Ohio Development Services Agency on Thursday awarded $1.3 million in historic preservation tax credits to the owner of the Gallagher Building at Commerce Street and Hazel Street. The building formerly housed Cedar’s Lounge.

The Gatta Group plans to renovate the building into 18 apartments on the upper floor and a restaurant and brew pub on the first floor. The total project cost is estimated at $6 million.

The Gallagher Building appeared on Sanborn Fire Insurance maps as early as 1907. The Gatta Group also completed the rehabilitation of the Federal Building in the same block.

The Ohio Development Services Agency awarded a total of $41.8 million in Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credits to 31 applicants planning to rehabilitate 35 historic buildings. Together, the projects are expected to leverage approximately $600 million in private investments in 12 communities.
