2 suspects indicted in Trumbull Co. Jail standoff

WARREN, Ohio (WYTV) – Two men involved in a jail standoff in Trumbull County last April were secretly indicted by a Trumbull County grand jury.

Kevin Johns, 25, and Richard Ware, 27,were indicted Wednesday in connection to the April 23, 2014 uprising at the Trumbull County Jail where Ware, Johns, and David Martin tied sheets around a door handle inside a jail cell, locking a corrections officer inside.

Dozens of police agencies surrounded the jail during the 6-hour ordeal. The men demanded nothing other than cigarettes.

Both Ware and Johns were immediately arraigned. Ware was brought in to court from Mansfield Correctional Institution where he is serving a 20-year sentence for aggravated robbery and felonious assault.

Johns is serving a 22-year sentence at Lebanon Correctional Institution for rape and kidnapping.

David Martin was tried and sentenced to death in September surrounding an unrelated case. He was convicted of kidnapping, robbing and shooting 21-year-old Jeremy Cole and shooting 25-year-old Melissa Putnam in her Oak Street home in Warren two years ago.
