YOUNSGTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – The Salvation Army in Mahoning County got a surprise Tuesday when it was going through the coins donated during this year’s red kettle campaign.
Someone dropped a gold coin into a kettle at the Walmart in Austintown. The coin is worth $1,200. Salvation Army officials said this year’s campaign is running about $18,000 behind from last year. This year’s goal is $345,000.
Bell ringers will be out in full force on Wednesday to make their final push toward the goal.
Last year, someone dropped a gold coin in the kettle at the JCPenney store in the Southern Park Mall. It also was worth $1,200.
And in 2012, someone dropped a 1-ounce United States Gold Eagle coin in a red kettle at the Giant Eagle in Canfield. That coin was appraised at more than $1,600.
