MAHONING COUNTY, Ohio (WYTV) — The week after Christmas is the busiest week for recycling of the year, and it could the last holiday season for Mahoning County’s current method of picking up materials.
The Mahoning County Green Team said they have all hands on deck to try to keep up with all the recycling coming in. But they are also considering a new system for collecting recyclable material in the area.
Currently the Green Team has drop-off locations, along with 18-gallon tubs for curbside pickup. However, that could soon be changing.
“So what we’re looking at is the feasibility of purchasing 96-gallon carts that have lids and wheels that are easy to roll out to the curb. If we did implement the carts, we would start collecting cardboard at the curb, which we currently do not,” said Lou Vega of the Mahoning County Green Team.
The County is still looking at how to pay for new recycling carts. Vega said that it is possible they would use the money they currently spend on drop-off sites.
The goal with the new carts would be to add to the total volume of materials that residents recycle.
