CANFIELD, Ohio (WYTV) – A Canfield High School student had his first book published and is almost done with his next book.
“The Vortex Entrance” is the first of a six-book series for Jackson Horvat. The book centers around a character named John Weaver, a 14-year-old boy starting a new school.
The first day of school is rough, but he meets a teacher who he just connects with.
“The whole time he feels the teacher kind of knows him in a way. He really does not know what that means, but he feels like he kind of knows him. And then by the end of this day, he is thrown into a whole new life,” Horvat said.
Horvat has most of the second book finished and said the rest of the series is roughly planned out. He found out his science fiction book was going to get published when he was 14.
“Holding a book that I wrote is like 1,000 times more incredible,” Horvat said.
The book contains drama, mystery and sorcery.
“I keep the sorcery, kind of magical element into it, but I really like to play with the drama and how the characters interact,” Horvat said.
Horvat wrote most of the book when he was in seventh grade. He brought chapters in for his class to read and to get feedback.
He started writing chapters for his book when he was in elementary school.
From the time he was little, he liked to write, especially creating his own characters. He plans to pursue writing as a career.
“I just enjoy writing. It is mostly in my down time, so that it is really not like extra work for me. It is just something I enjoy doing,” Horvat said.
Canfield Middle School English teacher Michelle DeFabio said writing the book tested Horvat’s limits as a writer.
“It is really imaginative and he creates a lot of demands on a reader to imagine what it is that he is writing,” DeFabio said.
A family friend got the Horvats in touch with publisher who wanted a few chapters of the book.
“We waited for months. It was a really, really long time,” Horvat said.
Then the call came that the book was going to print.
“I was just so overwhelmed that my dream was finally coming true,” Horvat said.
Horvat’s mother, Sherri, said the whole process has been very exciting and rewarding.
The book’s cover was designed by Horvat’s father, Gregg, who is a graphic designer.
“The Vortex Entrance” is available in print at Barnes and Noble and digitally on a Kindle.
