Chamber looking to form commission ahead of BRAC inspections

VIENNA, Ohio (WYTV) – The Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber is thinking ahead to the future of the Youngstown Air Reserve Station.

With the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) to possibly convene again in 2017, the chamber wants to form a local military affairs commission to help advocate the Vienna Air Reserve Station through the process.

The chamber is asking for $25,000 dollars a year to hire someone to take charge of the commission. Another $20,000 would come from private foundations outside of the port authority.

Board member John Boccieri said it is imperative to keep the Air Reserve Station open.

“The local community is going to weigh an impact with respect to showing our support but also to provide the funds necessary to lobby the members of Congress so that we can put our air base in a position that would be successful down the road,” Boccieri said.

The Western Reserve Port Authority may vote on the chamber’s proposal at its February meeting.
