Hometown Hero: Remembering Don Guthrie

don guthrie remembered as a hometown hero

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – What is a Hometown Hero? Someone you can rely on, trust in and go to in a time of need.

Those are all ways to describe what Don Guthrie did for the Valley, and that’s why our Hometown Hero for this week is Don Guthrie.

“He’s definitely a hometown hero for me. He just was always there for you, no matter what,” Jimmy’s Italian Specialties Owner Frank Occhibove said.

Occhibove said he could always count on Don Guthrie.

“I actually have never met Don. I just feel like I’ve always known him through watching him all my life,” Occhibove said.

That’s why back in July, his Liberty business encouraged its customers to participate in Wear Purple 4 Don Day in support of his battle with pancreatic cancer.

And they got quite the response.

“Probably triple the amount of people or more that usually come through our doors in support of Don, for the sole reason for Don,” Occhibove said.

Many people shared stories or just showed their appreciation.

“People would definitely say thank you for supporting Don, and they would say how they grew up with Don,”Occhibove said.

Jimmy plans to host another Wear Purple 4 Don day sometime this year to bring awareness for pancreatic cancer and remember Don Guthrie.

“Without a doubt, he will be missed by the whole community,” Occhibove said.
