BOARDMAN, Ohio (WYTV) – On Thursday, Boardman Rotary hand-delivered dictionaries to third-graders at Robinwood Elementary School.
The donation was part of the organization’s mission to increase literacy. It does beg the question, though: At a time when smartphones put the world at users’ fingertips, is giving kids physical books still relevant?
Organizers believe low-tech still has a role in learning.
“We can always go to our electronic devices, but you still have to learn the essential skills of working through a dictionary,” Boardman Rotary member Deborah Liptak said.
The Rotary Club plans to give dictionaries to third-graders in other schools as well. They pay for the books through fundraisers.
