North Jackson, OH (WYTV) – Over the past four years, Jackson Milton senior Mitch Tikkanen has been a big part of the Blue Jays’ wrestling success. He’s one of the top wrestlers in the state at 113 pounds and packs a punch in the classroom as well, making him a perfect fit for our Student Athlete of the Week.
“I mean I like to prove people wrong,” said Tikkanen. “What i like about the sport of wrestling is it teaches you to be self-sufficient. Regardless whether you’re division one, division two, or division three, it’s your choice how you’re gonna handle it and who you’re gonna be.”
Mitch has always loved the challenge of wrestling. He qualified for the state tournament last year and has over 100 wins in his career, but he’s always thinking about his next move.
“Sometimes it can be a million things at once, going a million miles an hour,” he said. “And then sometimes its just relaxed. It’s just you know, there’s good and bad days and that’s really what makes or breaks your mindset.”
That attitude has helped Mitch on and off the mat. He’s a three-time captain and 4.0 student, so how does he balance it all?
“That just comes with practice. Time management is a huge thing, you gotta prioritize sometimes.”
When it comes to his future, Mitch has always been ambitious. He plans to study Biology and eventually make an impact in the world of Genetics.
“I don’t want to study something that someone’s been there… you know, they’ve looked at it under a microscope,” he said. “I want something new, something to add to the world.”
And whether he’s on or off the mat, Mitch will always be a wrestler at heart.
“I want the legacy to continue, I want more names on the board,” said Tikkanen. “I want Jackson Milton to be known for wrestling state-wide.”
