NEW MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – What happens to old sports uniforms once athletes no longer need them?
Usually they end up in storage. But one school district has come up with a unique idea.
Springfield Local is donating the clothing to Mission of Love in Austintown. The charity will then give the uniforms to children in Guatemala.
School officials said they didn’t just want to throw the old uniforms in the trash and are happy they will be put to good use.
“To be able to reach out to all those different kids and different countries knowing that someone is going to have a cool jersey on and they will have a smile at the end of the day, feels good too,” Springfield Local Intermediate teacher Angela Jones said.
Springfield first offered the old uniforms to the public through a vintage sale and raised $1,100 for its Booster Association. The number-one seller was striped basketball pants from the 1990’s.
