Youngstown seeking architect for land next to Covelli Centre

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – The city of Youngstown soon could be a step closer to revitalizing a long dormant part of the downtown along the Mahoning River.

Mayor John McNally confirmed Wednesday the city is now seeking a “request for qualifications” for architects to come up with designs and other plans for a new amphitheater and some green space next to the Covelli Centre.

The area in question stretches from South Avenue to the land on either side of the Market Street bridge where the old Wean United used to stand. Money to hire an architect and pay for the designs, up to $90,000, was approved by City Council in late 2013.

Interested firms will have until March 24 to submit their qualifications for review.

McNally said he does not want to use general fund money to pay for the project. Instead, city officials hope grants, state funding and private donations will cover the estimated $1 million to $2 million construction costs.
