There’s something about Charlie Staples Original Bar-B-Que that feels like home. It just might be that “cup of love” he puts in every batch.
People come from all over to taste the homestyle recipes served in the restaurant at the corner of Rayen and Belmont avenues in Youngstown. Though the business moved across the street in 2005, the same sweet smell has been luring folks to that corner since 1974.
Upon entering the dining room, you will be immediately transported to New Orleans during Mardi Gras. The magic doesn’t end there, as you’re sure to be greeted by a friendly server who delivers food that will live up to the occasion.
Staples’ menu features items you’d expect to find at a barbecue restaurant, such as Pulled Pork and Beef Brisket sandwiches, but Staples’ Rib and Chicken dinners are what made the restaurant a local legend.
The Rib Dinners come in 1/4 slab, 1/2 slab and Full Slab servings. They are served with french fries, coleslaw and their “famous” saucy-bread.
The ribs are full of meat that easily falls off the bone and are slathered in a sweet and tangy sauce that will keep your mouth watering long after you’ve finished your meal. Order more than you can eat because you’ll want leftovers!
The Chicken Dinner come in four-piece meals, two-piece snacks or as chicken strips. Much like the ribs, the chicken is brushed with Staples’ signature sauce and served on a piece of saucy-bread.
If you like spicy, order either meal with Staples’ Hot Barbecue Sauce. It adds a zesty zip to the already appetizing dishes.
Pegged as a side order, the Big Bertha is a meal in itself. A giant baked potato is stuffed with bacon, chives, cheese, butter and sour cream. Add either Pulled Pork or Beef Brisket to your Big Bertha, and you’ll have the ultimate comfort food dish.
Not in the mood for barbecue? Not a problem. Staples’ menu includes both fish dishes and dinner-portioned salads. The MyValleyDining.com Review Team tried the Shrimp Salad and were blown away by its taste and quality.
Golden fried shrimp lie on a bed of romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes, eggs and cucumbers. Topped with croutons, shredded cheese and Staples’ Sweet Italian House Dressing, eating health(ier) never tasted so good.
While served as a side dish, the coleslaw is certainly not to be ignored. The shredded cabbage and carrots are mixed with a sweet and creamy sauce before being topped with paprika. This tasty starter serves as the perfect warm up for your anticipated meal.
No barbecue dinner is complete without Baked Beans, and Staples makes some great ones. One bite of these, and you’ll swear your mother was in the kitchen.
Hungry yet? Save room for dessert! We recommend the homemade Sweet Potato Pie. The rich filling is spiced with cloves and generously poured into fresh, made-from-scratch pie crust. If nothing else, stop by for coffee and pie. It’s classic Southern baking at its finest!
Charlie Staples has a separate entrance for take-out orders, where you can also enjoy a cold drink at the bar. A second cocktail bar is positioned in the balcony area of the dining room for your convenience.
On a warm summer night, enjoy all of the above dishes on the patio. Whether you’re a barbecue fanatic, or just a fair-weather fan, you’ll definitely be coming back to Charlie Staples Original Bar-B-Que.
