Hidden off of the beaten path in the city of Struthers, sits a family restaurant that has become a local legend.
John A. Walters opened Elmton Restaurant, located on 5th Street between Elm and Sexton streets, in 1945. The restaurant has been handed down through the generations and is now run by John’s grandson, Jack Walters. Same location, same family,” Walters said. “I’m the third generation. Mom’s still doing business with me.”
While Elmton Restaurant is known for its Pizza and Broasted Chicken, there are some sandwiches and pasta dishes that you must try. If The Elmton is relatively new to you, try the Gyro. Thick slices of meat, along with lettuce, tomato, onion and tzatziki, are wrapped snuggly inside a pita and served with fresh cut French fries. This Greek classic is heavy on flavor and light on your wallet.
A tasty entree offered by The Elmton is the Cheese Ravioli Dinner. A generous portion of ravioli is smothered in the Elmton’s homemade sweet marinara sauce and topped with two meatballs. The dish is served with salad, bread and butter. The pasta has a taste so genuine, you’ll forget your grandmother didn’t prepare it. “We’ve got good food and a lot of it is comfort food,” Walters said.
The Elmton’s Pizza is a long-time Valley legend. The dough is started every morning at 4:30 a. m. When the dough is ready, Elmton cooks slather it with homemade sauce, green peppers and a blend of Swiss and provolone cheeses. Additional toppings are available by request. It is then baked to perfection for 35 minutes. The final product is a cheese-loaded, crisp, flavorful dream come true for pizza lovers. One slice of The Elmton’s Pizza will turn you into a loyal customer. “We don’t use frozen dough; we don’t stick it on a conveyer belt,” Walters said. On a slow day, The Elmton sells about 300 pizzas, he said, and on a busy night customers can wait up to an hour for their pie. The Elmton averages about 70,000 pizzas a year, he said.
The only item as famous as the Elmton’s Pizza is its Broasted Chicken. Broasted Chicken is cooked in a broaster at 350 degrees for nine minutes. It’s cooked from the inside-out, so it pushes oil out of the product instead of drawing it in, he said. The Broasted Chicken is packed with flavor, not fat. Its crispy outside is perfectly complimented by its juicy inside. Not only is this chicken every bit as good as its fried counterpart, it’s low in cholesterol and oil content. The Elmton’s Broasted Chicken is the party food that you won’t feel guilty about eating.
You may become a regular customer after eating there once, but it will take you some time to get into the Mug Club. Each customer who wants to participate in the Mug Club pays $10 a year, and its your mug every time you go there. Walters said there’s a waiting list, so you’ll have to wait your turn. The Mug Club started 25 years ago, he said. Money generated from the club used to be given to charity, he said. The Elmton now uses the funds for its annual scholarships, which are given to two Struthers High School seniors. “It comes from the customers who come in and renew their mugs,” Walters said. “We can’t take the credit for it, we just write the check.”
Come as you are and stay that way. The Elmton is Struthers No. 1 place for comfort food in comfortable surroundings.
