MINERAL RIDGE, Ohio (WYTV) – The Red Devils and Blue Devils have battled before. On Wednesday night it was the Western Reserve Blue Devils that came out on top with a 49-33 victory over Lordstown to advance them to the Division IV district championship game Saturday afternon against the Jackson-Milton Blue Jays. The victory improves the Blue Devils record to 19-6 on the season. The Red Devils end the season with a 19-9 record.
The Blue Devils had an impressive defensive game, holding the Red Devils to only 10-points at the halftime break. Offensively it was another story.
“”We kind of hang our hat on defense. We know at tournament time defense can always be consistent. You have hot and cold nights shooting, but if you always bring an effort and your always in position and mentally sound defensively, you give yourself a fighting chance,” Blue Devils Coach Steve Miller said.
“Offensively I thought we stunk,” Miller commented. “It looked like we hadn’t played in awhile. Aleah (Hughes) makes our offense go and she hasn’t been in school for two and half days home sick with the flu. So we did a lot of walk through stuff.”
The Blue Devils grabbed the early lead, racing out to a 12-0 advantage and holding a 14-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. They would push their lead out to 17-points midway through the second stanza before Lordstown cut it to a 13-point, 23-10 margin at the intermission.
Midway through the third quarter the Blue Devils seemed to get their offense in gear when Rachael Maslach, Lauren Falasca, and Tory White scored on three consecutive possessions to give the Blue Devils a commanding 20-point, 32-12 lead. White’s score came with 4:29 left in the period.
Falasca led the Blue Devils with 12 points while Aleah Hughes added 11.
Talia Tobin score a game-high 14 points for the Red Devils while Malena Liming contributed 11.
With the victory, the Devils will now face their rivals in the Blue Jays for the district title.
“Jackson is going to play us tough,” Sydney Miller said. “I think it’s going to be a good game and I guess the best team will win.”
