New Middletown, OH (WYTV) – Senior Mark Schuler is a three sport star for the Tigers, racking up 10 varsity letters in football, basketball, and baseball. He’s also a leader in the classroom and community…earning him the honor of our Student Athlete of the Week.
“I believe that in everybody’s life you should be able to make a difference in some way,” said Schuler.
Mark has made a large impact at Springfield, and it’s not just his 6’4″, 230 pound frame. His leadership and unselfishness has set an example for the entire school.
“It has a lot to do with my family,” he said. ” I mean, growing in a family with four older brothers and with the age difference, it was almost like growing up with five dads in my house.”
Needless to say, Mark has matured quickly, and blossomed into a powerful force on the basketball and football fields. This past football season, he was named 1st team All Ohio…serving as a tight end, defensive end, and punter.
“I like showing people like how to get things done,” said Schuler. “On the football field, if I would get like a sack…sacks are always like a momentum changers, but when you’re able to make a big play like that, it rallies everyone else behind you.”
The Tigers have rallied on the basketball court as well, finishing the regular season a perfect 22-0 heading into the state tournament.
“This is our last shot, so we know we can’t let anything get by us, so we gotta take everday, one step at a time.”
The next step for Mark is Youngstown State, where he’ll play football for the new-look Penguins and major in Exercise Science.
“There’s a possibility for like great things to happen and to have the chance to be apart of that, and to be a part of the football field with everything going on…it’s just like one chapter down in my life and pretty soon I’m going to be starting to write the next one.”
