Former Academic Challenge champs reconnect in medical school

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WYTV) – For 10 years, from 2003 to 2012, WYTV 33 News anchor Stan Boney hosted a show called “Academic Challenge” involving high school and middle school students.

Two of the students on championship teams, Joe Shivers of Salem and Manish Mehta of Howland, have reconnected at Columbia Medical School in New York City. Shivers won the 2006 Academic Challenge championship, beating Howland when Mehta was a freshman. In turn, Mehta’s Howland team beat Salem in 2009.

After high school, Shivers went to Harvard and graduated with a degree in chemical and physical biology. He then spent three years in California doing diabetes research before enrolling at Columbia.

Mehta graduated from Johns Hopkins University, double majoring in bio-medical engineering and applied mathematics and statistics. He started medical school right after college.

Both have tentative graduation dates of 2017.

Shivers said he might like to return to Northeast Ohio and be a pediatrician. Mehta is still deciding between internal medicine and ophthalmology.
