Canfield, OH (WYTV) – If you’re familiar with Canfield athletics, you’ve probably seen Rachel Tinkey compete. The Cardinals senior is a two sport standout in softball and basketball, and carries a 4.0 GPA. Those efforts and more have earned her our Student Athlete of the Week.
“I just always try to go out and put the team before myself and really play for the front of the jersey.” said Tinkey. “I try to go out there and leave it all on the court every single time.”
Needless to say, Rachel goes all out in everything she does. Whether it’s softball or basketball, she’s proven to be one of the top competitors at Canfield the past four years.
“I am very, very competitive,” she said. “Even watching sports, I get very competitive. I was watching the Duke-North Carolina game the other night and I was getting real into it that I couldn’t talk to any of my family members in the room. So just being apart of competition in sports is probably my greatest love.”
And Rachel brings that work ethic to the classroom as well, where she carries a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the National Honor’s Society.
“There are definitely nights when i go to bed late,” said Tinkey. “But I think one of the biggest things is just coming home and being disciplined enough to get stuff done right after practice.
And Rachel’s hard work has paid off. She’s a 1,000 point scorer, three-time District Champion, and All State shortstop in her time with the Cardinals.
“I don’t if I would go back and change anything,” she said. “I’m just so thankful to have been surrounded by such great teachers, teammates, and coaches and of course my family. It’s just been probably the best four years that I could of asked for here.”
