17-year-old charged in August Youngstown shooting

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – The grand jury indictment of a 17-year-old in connection with a fatal shooting in August in Youngstown was announced Thursday.

A grand jury indicted David Jenkins, 17, charging him with aggravated riot, involuntary manslaughter, felonious assault, murder and a firearm specification Thursday, according to court records and the lead prosecutor on the case.

The prosecutor said that Jenkins’ case was bound over from juvenile court and that investigators believe he fired a shot which killed Shawn Cortez, 17. Jenkins will be tried as an adult.

Police and prosecutors said the incident on Winona Avenue on the city’s south side on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014, started as an argument between rivaling families and quickly grew into mobs of more than 30 people shouting at each other, with two women in the group recording the whole thing on cell phones. The fight led to gunfire, leaving Shawn Cortez, 17, dead.

Authorities initially charged 13 people, including Jenkins, in the case.
