The sign in front of Dickey’s reads, “The Best Darn Lunch in Town.”
After one visit, it’s quite possible you’ll agree. Located just off Mahoning Avenue on Meridian Road, owner Ray Dickey’s establishment is the corner bar that serves up great food and good times. With prices ranging from $1.25 for a hot dog to $8.50 for a Sirloin Tip and Potato, you’ll get your money’s worth and you won’t leave hungry.
The Big D is a hand-crafted cheeseburger loaded with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise. The perfectly spiced burger is made in-house with ground chuck, so it’s not perfectly shaped, but it is perfectly scrumptious.
Dickey’s offers traditional sandwiches, such as the BLT, Club and Tuna, but it also boasts a variety of localand house favorites, like the Pepper & Egg, Hot Sausage and the Sloppy Dickey Dog a filet hot dog topped with Sloppy Joe, Swiss cheese, mustard and onion. Manager Cindy Zimmerman says most people eat it with a fork. Try any of the above sandwiches with Dickey’s hand-cut French Fries.
Dickey’s is also known for their Wings, as well as their Wing Night. Dickey’s features $.25 wings on Tuesday nights, with 26 flavors to choose from. Get a full order of one flavor or mix and match there’s only a four wing minimum for flavors.
Dickey’s has the traditional flavors like Hot, Mild, Cajun and Garlic, but also offers some less heard of choices, such as Honey Hot, Smoky Ranch and 3-in-1, which is Hot, Barbeque and Garlic mixed together.
The Parmesan Ranch is a must-order if you want less heat but don’t want to sacrifice the taste. The thick, creamy ranch coats the wing and the parmesan adds a cheesy zest to this common flavor, making it absolutely irresistible. Get creative: order sauces on the side and mix them together. Yum!
You absolutely cannot say you’ve been to Dickey’s without ever trying the Hot Macedonian Stew. But you’ll have to show up on a Thursday to join that club.
The Hot Macedonian Stew is similar to beef stew, but made with chunks of pork, potatoes, carrots and Hungarian hot peppers. The hearty, spicy stew is a secret family recipe, created by Zimmerman’s mother, Bertie, in 1979.
Dickey’s has served that stew every Thursday except the day Bertie was buried three years ago. It wasn’t a special tribute to her or anything; there was just no one there who knew how to make it.
Dickey’s opens at 11 a.m., 365 days a year. They serve fish every Friday and breakfast until 3 p.m. every Saturday.
So swing by Dickey’s, and if you get a chance, try the Chili. Fitch football standout and Former San Francisco 49er Jeff Wilkins says it’s the best Chili in town.
