Weathersfield traffic stop results in gunfire

Police in Weathersfield, Ohio opened fire on a van after it smashed into a patrol car and kept on going.


WEATHERSFIELD, Ohio (WYTV) – Police in Weathersfield continue to investigate an officer involved shooting that happened late Monday.

The incident happened just after 9 p.m. when two Weathersfield police officers made a traffic stop on West Park Avenue.

During the stop, a van traveling down the road struck one of the patrol cars and kept on going.

One of the officers opened fire, hitting the van several times.

The driver, Edward Kitt, 59, of Weathersfield, was arrested and is being held in the Trumbull County Jail. Police say he appeared to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Kitt suffered minor injuries in the incident. The officers were not hurt.

Kitt is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday.
