Boardman cancels class trip to Baltimore after riots

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WYTV) – The riots in Baltimore are now affecting middle school students in the Valley.

Students at Glenwood Middle School in Boardman were planning a trip to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore. Once school administrators heard about the riots, those plans changed because of safety concerns.

So instead of going to Baltimore to learn about our nation’s history, they will be going to the Naval Academy in Annapolis.

Boardman Superintendent Frank Lazzeri said he does not think rioters would hurt the children, but he does not want to take that risk.

“When child safety is first, you never want to put children in any situation where there potentially might be a situation that would jeopardize their safety,” Lazzeri said. “You can put your children in a bubble and say ‘we’re never going to go on a field trip,’ but I think that is irresponsible on the part of the school administration and teachers, so to deny a child that opportunity would be senseless.”

It was too late for the travel company to issue a refund. The trip is planned for Mother’s Day weekend.
