Former Niles employee sentenced for stealing from city

Wilson arraign

NILES, Ohio (WYTV) – A judge sentenced a former Niles city treasury employee Tuesday after she pleaded guilty to stealing from the city in March.

A grand jury indicted Phyllis Wilson on April 24, 2014, charging her with theft in office. Tuesday, a judge sentenced her to six months in prison and ordered her to pay $1,000 per month in restitution until she repays the $143,000 which the state of Ohio said she took.

Ohio Auditor Dave Yost said Wilson was responsible for depositing cash utility payments in the city’s bank account, but instead pocketed the money in 57 instances.
