Trumbull deputy on leave over Facebook post

Trumbull county sheriff

WARREN, Ohio (WYTV) – Trumbull County Sheriff Tom Altiere spent some time surfing the worldwide web this week.

He said he wishes he had been comparing prices on a new car, or maybe looking into a vacation package. Instead, he was on social media and just shaking his head.

Altiere got a call Friday about a Facebook post by one of his deputies, Mike Geer.

“Looked it up. In fact, I got emailed a copy of it. Looked at it and said ‘that is definitely racially motivated,’ or a rant, if you will,” Altiere said.

Geer had been assigned to provide security at the Trumbull County Job and Family Services building. On Tuesday, a ranking member of the sheriff’s office showed up at the building to tell Geer he was being put on leave.

“Whatever he said, those types of statements should not be tolerated anytime, anywhere,” Trumbull County JFS Director John Gargano said.

Enough people had seen the Facebook post though and word got around quick. The sheriff is keeping the post private, but it was so serious that Geer was put on leave while the sheriff proceeds to get him fired.

“We have great deputies. Treat everybody fair, impartial, the way that they should be. And if you have anyone who has an attitude like that, it is just against our policies. We don’t tolerate it,” Altiere said.

The sheriff also called the post unprofessional.
