Canfield rallies past Poland in District Finals

ALLIANCE, Ohio (WYTV) – Marina Sturgeon’s infield single drove in the game winning run, as Canfield rallied past Poland 5-4 in eight innings in the Division II District Finals at Alliance High School Tuesday.

Poland took a 4-0 lead into the seventh inning, but couldn’t hold on for the victory.  In that seventh inning, Canfield’s Ally Sammarco and Kara Rothbauer tied the game at 4 on a pair of 2-run doubles. Amelia Manenti went 2-4 in the victory.

Cardinals’ Pitcher Bridget Durkin picked up the win, tossing four shutout innings with four strikeouts.

The Bulldogs plated four runs in the top of the third inning, which included a 2-run double by Amanda Kabetso.  She finished the game 2-4 with 2 RBI.  Kristyn Svetlak and Brielle Nocera also drove in runs for the Bulldogs.  Amanda Wire also was strong at the plate, finishing the game 3-4.

Canfield improves to 23-7 on the season, and advances to face the winner of Conneaut-Jefferson in the Division II Regional Finals Thursday May 28th at 5PM at Akron’s Firestone Stadium.

Poland’s season comes to an end with a record of 19-9 overall.
