Gardiner shines as Champion returns to State

Massillon, OH (WYTV) – Senior Haylee Gardiner threw 15 strikeouts in a complete game effort to help Champion defeat Elyria Catholic, 4-0 Saturday in Massillon in a Division III Regional Final.

The Golden Flashes got on the board first when freshman Megan Turner hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 1st. The game was later delayed by lightning for nearly an hour.

But Champion got back on track with a sacrifice fl by Alayna Fell in the 4th inning to score Molly Williams. Then in the 5th, two RBI doubles by Turner and Williams put two more runs on the board to make it 4-0 Champion.

Turner finished 3-3 on the day with a home run, two doubles, and two RBI, while Williams went 2-3 with a single, double, and an RBI. Gardiner allowed just three hits with 15 strikeouts in the shutout win, and is now 16-2 on the season.

Champion improves to 28-4 on the season and advance to play Richwood North Union in a State Semifinal Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Firestone Stadium in Akron.
