Champion softball rolls to state final

AKRON, Ohio (WYTV) -The Champion Golden Flashes softball team used a 5-run 3rd inning to doom Richwood North Union 6-3 in the Division III State Semifinal to advance to the Championship Saturday morning.

Champion’s McKenzie Zigmont took Madison Wedding’s second pitch of the game for a home run to give Champion an early 1-0 lead.

It was Zigmont again starting things for the Golden Flashes in the 3rd. She led the inning off with a single, and Champion used 5 more singles in the inning to extend their lead to 6-0. Zigmont went 3-4 with the home run and two runs scored.

Six different Champion players had an RBI in the game.

It was all Haylee Gardiner needed, pitching another complete game allowing 7 hits, 3 R (2ER), and 5 K’s. Gardiner’s trouble inning came in the 7th after allowing the first four batters in the inning to reach base. However she followed that by retiring the next three to end the game and give the Golden Flashes a shot at their 6th state title in school history.

Champion (29-4) will face Bloom-Carroll (26-4) Saturday morning at 10 AM from Firestone Stadium.
