SALEM, Ohio (WYTV) – Salem City Council decided Wednesday night to not take over the former branch of the Butler Institute of American Art in downtown Salem.
Council had considered taking over the space after demolition work on a neighboring business rendered the storefront unsafe and headed for the wrecking ball. However, there are large costs associated with repairing or demolishing the building, so council opted not to take it over.
The Salem Fire Department condemned the building and now council members have 30 days to decide what to do. Mayor John Berlin said he he hopes the beauty and integrity of downtown Salem is maintained.
“I am hoping that there will be an individual or companies out there who would be interested in taking on the remodeling of it and also receiving it from them,” Berlin said.
The Mayor noted that there is one company that may be interested in buying the building from the Butler Art Institute.
