Gas well leak leads to evacuation in Liberty

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WYTV) – Nearly 50 homes were asked to voluntarily evacuate Friday evening after a gas well leak in the 6000 block of Lakeview Drive.

A resident heard a hissing sound coming from the well and when it did not stop like it normally does, he called the fire department. Firefighters were concerned because humid weather keeps the gas cloud low, so they asked residents on Lakeview between Warner Road, Seifert-Lewis Road and Everett Hull Road to leave. The evacuation was not mandatory, but was recommended, according to the fire department.

The gas well, known as the Ferrara well, is located behind Doughton Golf Course on the Hubbard border and is owned by P.A.C. Drilling, according to a sign at the site.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes around 8 p.m. once the leak was contained.

“The biggest concern we had for tonight was the high humidity that would actually push the gas down lower where there was more ignition sources. But everything was resolved without incident,” Liberty Fire Capt. Bill Opsitnik said.

The gas well has been shut down and the cause of the leak is under investigation.
