One win away; Poland gets by Watterson

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WYTV) – Poland’s Jared Burkert pitched the Bulldogs past Bishop Watterson – 2-0 – this morning in the Division II State Semifinal. Burkert tossed 7 innings – striking out 8, walking none and allowing just two hits – to claim his 8th win of the season (8-0).

In the top of the third inning, Ricky Svetlak’s single loaded the bases for Poland. Burkert was hit by a Sam Rice offering to score Anthony Calcagni from third to give the Bulldogs’ a 1-0 lead. In the top of the seventh, Dom Lipari singled up the middle which scored Eric White to give Poland a commanding 2-0 advantage entering the bottom half of the final inning. With one out, Rice singled to centerfield off of Burkert. Jared retired the final two batters he faced including a strikeout of Nathan Meyer (Urban Meyer’s son – coach of Ohio State football) to secure the victory for Poland.

Eric White held the distinction of being the lone player in the contest to have a pair of base hits. Dom Lipari reached base three times (a single, two walks).

For Watterson, Rice tossed 6 2/3 innings while allowing 6 hits and 3 walks.

The Bulldogs (28-2) will face Michael Hendricks and Defiance (who won the title in 2013) tomorrow at 4 pm from Huntington Park.
