Sharon PD warns of fake IRS calls

SHARON, Pa. (WYTV) – Sharon Police issued a warning Thursday morning about a scam involving someone who claims to be from the IRS.

According to police, the deception starts with a phone call from a 360 area code, showing up as “out of area” or Washington D.C. on caller ID.

Victims are told that the IRS is filing a lawsuit for tax fraud against them before the caller asks for Social Security numbers and bank and credit card information.

Police said the IRS will always make initial contact by mail and that citizens should not give out any personal information over the phone.
