YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Mayor John McNally and Fire Chief John O’Neill promoted eight firefighters in Youngstown Wednesday.
“It’s quite a thrill to be moved up into a command position. I’ve been there as a firefighter myself,” Youngstown Councilman John Swierz said.
Family members and friends came to support the seven new lieutenants and one new captain. Lieutenant Christopher Vass said his three young sons are frequent visitors to the station.
“They come to visit me at the fire department, they love it, they’re always acting like they are firemen and say they want to be firemen too,” Vass said.
Vass said he can’t see himself doing anything else.
“Just serving the community working with my fellow co-workers, it’s just great, and I love coming to work every day,” Vass said. “It’s the greatest job in the world, I absolutely love it.”
The new lieutenants will drive the engines to fire scenes and help train new firefighters sworn in last month.
“It’s definitely an on-the-job training here, and we do get our fair share of fires, of course,” O’Neill said.
The ceremony also include the promotion of April Edwards to captain.
