SOUTHINGTON, Ohio (WYTV) – We’ll be working to learn more today, about an elderly man in Southington who sheriff’s deputies say opened fire on them Tuesday as they approached his home.
One of the deputies shot and killed Charles Crandall, and now the Ohio Bureau of Crimnial Investigation is looking into the matter.
Our 33 News crews were there into the evening, as people were still being re-routed around the scene.
Neighbors said the area is normally a very quiet place, and they were shocked by all of the police activity.
“Basically, in 29 years, I hardly ever seen a cop on this road at all,” neighbor Randy McAvoy said. “Now I got to make a u-turn and go another way home, especially during all of this rain.”
The area was blocked for hours, for the police investigation.
The granddaughter of a neighbor told WYTV the man who died, Charles Crandall, sometimes had her grandfather take him to run errands.
Police aren’t speculating why Crandall started shooting, and the two sheriff’s deputies are on paid leave pending the BCI investigation.
