SHARON, Pennsylvania (WYTV) – It appears a domestic dispute in Sharon resulted in a man and woman being struck several times each by gunfire on Sunday evening.
The male victim, who police identified as William Emmett, 45, of Hempfield Township in Mercer County, is dead. The female is his wife Amy and she is in stable condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Police found his body lying next to his wife after multiple 911 calls about a domestic dispute. Police said they are parents of three children under 18.
Police said the two fought over a handgun in a parking lot along East State Street near Stambaugh Avenue. That parking lot is for employees of nearby Sharon Regional Health System where William Emmett is an employee.
A neighbor said she heard a gunshot then another two or three shots a few seconds later. In a matter of minutes, she heard sirens.
Police were at the scene throughout the evening. They say the handgun used in the shooting incident has been recovered, but police won’t say who owned it.
Both victims were shot in the chest, police said.
“It is like a puzzle they are putting back together. It is not like a whodunit. It is more like putting the thing back together to it makes sense,” said Sharon Police Chief Gerry Smith.
There was no protection order on file in Mercer County Court.
“Right now, the detectives are building some background information to find out some history of these two and if there was problems in their marriage. We don’t know that right now,” Smith said.
Detectives are interviewing family members, neighbors and co-workers.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
In addition to the hospital, Smith said his detectives are working with nearby businesses during this investigation.
“There are multiple businesses in that area that have cameras that we are hoping at least give us some time frame on the two’s arrival, who arrived there first and things like that,” Smith said.
The Sharon Regional Health System released a statement Monday saying they are deeply saddened by the death of their employee, William Emmett.
The Sharon Regional Health System family is deeply saddened by the loss of our employee William Emmett last night. We appreciate the fast response of our community’s first responders. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by this tragic event.
Counseling and assistance are being provided to employees.
Hospital officials said there are extensive security measures in place but do not disclose the details of those precautions to the public.
Safety drills are performed regularly to prepare for potential scenarios and security programs are reviewed often, according to Interim Marketing Director Michelle Schmader.
