Active shooter training at YSU

Active shooter training at YSU on Aug. 11, 2015

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – They were preparing for the unthinkable at YSU Tuesday night. Resident assistants in residence halls joined campus police officers in active shooter training at the Cafaro House dorms.

There’s a new procedure too. The “old school” method  was to lock the door and wait in terror for the shooter to hopefully pass by. The new procedure is to lock the door, barricade it by pushing stuff in front of it, and even evacuating if possible. It can be the difference between life and death.

RA Ian Tanner says, “I think one of the benefits of training is that our police are going through full response too. To keep our students safe while they’re here.”

The training instills confidence in the RA’s and reduces panic as well. Though everyone has confidence YSU is a safe place.

RA Cory Fukmer says, “It’s as safe as it can be. The world is a scary place and you gotta be ready for anything out there.”
