YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – The Mahoning County OVI Task Force today announced its participation in the annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.
From August 21 through September 7, there will be extra traffic patrols nationwide to remind people not to drink and drive.
The goal is to save lives by stepping up enforcement.
Police say about a third of all people killed on U.S. highways die in crashes that involve drunk drivers.
Over Labor Day weekend, that figure has jumped to one-half in recent years.
Police say this this campaign is about both enforcement and education.
“Enforcement’s fine, we can go out and arrest impaired drivers,” Canfield Assistant Police Chief Scott Weamer said. “But if we’re not educating the public about the problem, about why we’re doing it, and that we are out there in a heightened effort to enforce the traffic law.”
