WARREN, Ohio (WYTV) – In Warren, police officers, firefighters and emergency medical workers were in uniform in church Sunday morning. They were attending the annual Blue Mass at Saint Mary’s Church, honoring those in their professions who have died while in the line of duty.
“I’ve had several friends that have passed away in the fire and police departments”, says Grand Knight Fred Hernon with the Knights of Columbus Warren council which led the Mass procession. “It’s mandatory for me. That is why we’re here. And until I die, we will continue doing it”, says Hernon.
Warren Mayor Doug Franklin, officers from the city of Warren and deputies with the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Department were among those in attendance. So was Sheriff Tom Altiere. “You know, we’re like that in Trumbull County. We get along with Warren. Everybody gets along together. It’s like one big family”, says Altiere. “It’s a great token to law enforcement and all professional firefighters, EMTs and paramedics. It’s just nice to be recognized and that we’re wanted and cared for.”
The usual Sunday parishioners offered a special prayer for all emergency officials, to stay safe as they do their jobs.
