Boardman neighbors want to remind motorists of speed

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WYTV) — Recently, signs have been popping up around Boardman neighborhoods asking drivers to slow down.

Drive like your kids live here. The red and white signs are posted in many yards in Boardman.

“People go down the street very quickly. We actually have had several animals killed,” said Rachel Bell, of Boardman.

Rachel Bell has one in her yard.

After her family cat got hit by a car and died, she couldn’t imagine a child losing their life to speeding in her neighborhood.

“There are a lot of children in the street and if anything were to happen to any of them it would make me really sad,” said Bell.

Bell bought several signs for her neighbors, including Brittany Rusu who has two little boys.

She knows all too well how important it is to keep an eye on the little ones.

“You try your best to keep a watchful eye…sorry…,” said Rusu.

Just like that, during our brief talk, Landan was being a normal carefree three-year-old, which is why she always pays attention to her sons.

“Just because you’re paying attention doesn’t mean everyone else is,” said Rusu.

For the week the signs have been up, Brittany and Rachel say cars have been slowing down.

“It’s bright and red. Big letters. People actually notice it,” said Rusu.

“I’ve also had a lot of the neighbors say how much they like these signs and have talked about getting them themselves as well,” said Bell.

Bell has a message for those who speed down her street.

“Be aware that there are children on the street and that the speed limit is 25. When you fly down here doing 30, 35, or 40, if someone runs out in front of you, you’re not going to have time to stop,” said Bell.

And stopping in time, could save a life.
